New York City is at a turning point with COVID-19. While we have maintained low levels of community transmission over the past several months, we are now seeing very concerning increases in cases and hospitalizations across the City. We need to act now to stop these trends. This will require an all-hands-on-deck effort.

It is more important than ever for New Yorkers to get tested and observe the Core Four at this critical turning point.

The City is advising against all travel and against gatherings with people outside your household for the holidays this year. If you do travel, you must follow all State & City guidelines for quarantining and/or testing upon return. See the Health Department’s travel guidance and Safe Holiday guidance.

Regardless of travel, all New Yorkers should be getting tested. If you test positive, please isolate immediately and answer the call from contact tracers when it comes. Contact tracers will help stop the spread of the virus and can connect you with any resources you need, including medication delivery.

NATIONAL BLACK LEADERSHIP COMMISSION ON HEALTH: advocacy, policy and action

PROMOTING THE PREVENTION OF HEALTH AND THE PREVENTION OF DISEASES WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY 

125th Street more than a commercial district.  It is also a major service provider of health services.  One of them is the National Black leadership Commission on Health (NBLCH).  NBLCH builds on the strong foundtion of National Black Leadership Commission on AIDs and it is the nation's oldest nonprofit organization with 32 years dedicated to educating, mobilizing and empowering Black leaders to meet the Health Challenge on AIDs. 

Its remarkable evolution takes the organization to greater levels of comprehensive advocacy, policy and action organization to address multiple health issues and disparities affecting the Black community.

One of the unfortunate impacts of COVID19 involved large amounts of litter.  NBLCHH (a member of the 125th Street BID) was very concerned about the negative impacts that litter could have on the health of residents that was hit the hardest by the pandemic.  They reached out to the the 125th Street BID that has been cleaning the major commercial district for 27 years to develop a strategy to keep Harlem Clean.  The results was a partnership between the two organizations, outreach to block associations, and a weekly clean campaign.

The effort received citywide press and other block association, community organizations and elected officials citywide launched clean campaigns.

The impacts was impactful.  Residents and businesses and elected officials mobilized citywide to keep New York Clean during these difficult times.

NBLCH has expanded its focus to include HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, sickle cell, diabetes and mental health. Championing black health through advocacy, policy and action is the main goal of our newly expanded organization.

CovidWatcher asks citizens to take daily surveys to contribute to COVID-19 research in New York City

CovidWatcher is a research, advocacy, and policy initiative developed by Columbia University in collaboration with NYC community partners.

CovidWatcher is mobilizing city residents from every neighborhood to fill out online anonymous surveys that ask, how is the pandemic affecting you and your family? The survey will ask you to answer questions about your health and exposure to COVID-19, social and emotional well-being, and concerns access to education, childcare, technology, internet, public benefits and social supports.

Tell us how you are doing and what you need. The goal of our project is to tell city leaders where to target resources, and develop better policies to ensure the health, safety, and economic vitality of New York City as we rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic.

If we want government, businesses, philanthropy, community and advocacy groups to act strategically and make smart decisions, we have to tell them what we know. We must share what is and is not working for ourselves, our families and our communities.

2020 has been a tough year. During these unprecedented times, it's more important than ever to take care of yourself and your family. The 125th Street BID encourages Harlemites to do their part to fight back against COVID-19. Practice social distancing, wear a mask when social distancing isn't possible, and wash your hands frequently.

Please note: When attending any businesses on 125th Street, community members must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Do your part to keep our community healthy!

Southern black migrants brought the blues to Chicago, where the music helped them forge connections and transform an unfamiliar, often inhospitable city into a new home. The music was also transformed—electrified and amplified to compete with urban noise. Tucked away in the West Ridge community is a treasured place— Indian Boundary Park.  The 13-acre park was developed in two major phases—the first in 1916 and the second in the early 1920s. Plans for both phases were created by Richard Gloede, a landscape gardener and horticulturalist from Evanston.  Unlike other parks of the era that accommodated numerous athletic activities, Gloede and the Park Board sought to create a beautiful landscape for rest and relaxation.  The park has always had a seamless relationship with the adjacent neighborhood, and despite various changes over the years, Indian Boundary Park has always retained its special character.
