Huge East Harlem Development Tops Out, Announces Union Deal

HARLEM, NY — The enormous Sendero Verde affordable housing complex being built in East Harlem marked two milestones in the past week, reaching peak height on its initial two buildings and announcing a new deal to hire local residents as construction workers.

The project's first phase, consisting of a 15-story and 10-story building, will include 361 apartments, a public charter school and a 12,000-square-foot community center. It topped out last week, with an estimated completion date of 2022.

The full project, once complete, will bring 700 affordable apartments spread out over three buildings. It will also include a YMCA facility, a health-foods market and community spaces including nonprofit offices and a Mount Sinai community health center.

Lloyd's Carrot Cake Owner Betty Campbell-Adams Dies Suddenly

HARLEM, NY — Betty Campbell-Adams, who co-founded Lloyd's Carrot Cake in an East Harlem basement and helped build it into a beloved neighborhood fixture that shipped its treats across the globe, died suddenly last week, the store announced.

She was 65, according to ABC7.

"We are deeply saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of our beloved leader Betty Campbell-Adams." the store wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.

"Betty has tirelessly been the foundation for us here, nearly 15 years since the passing of her husband, and our founder Lloyd Adams."

Part Of Harlem Becomes 'Yellow Zone' | Week In Review

HARLEM, NY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday designated much of Upper Manhattan, including parts of Harlem, as a micro-cluster "yellow zone," imposing some new restrictions on businesses and gatherings amid a continued uptick in coronavirus cases.

The yellow zone stretches from 133rd to 187th streets between the Hudson River and East River to the north, before narrowing along St. Nicholas Avenue further south. That includes the Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill areas of Harlem, as well as most of Washington Heights.

"Upper Manhattan is going to become a yellow zone. Basically, the Washington Heights area is 3.3," Cuomo told reporters Monday, referring to the percentage of coronavirus tests that came back positive in the past week within that zone.

Street Corner Resources In Harlem Receives $5,000 Donation

HARLEM, NY – Harlem's Street Corner Resources recently received a $5,000 donation to help the program's online and technology programs offered through its neighborhood Peace Cafe.

The donation from Spectrum was made as part of the fourth annual Street Corner Resources Day, which recognizes the organization's work in the community.

The donation will be used to purchase a variety of technical enhancements that will allow participants to utilize virtual programming and online resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Harlem Nonprofit's New Home Takes Shape In Hamilton Heights

HARLEM, NY — In the past few years, Harlem residents have grown accustomed to shiny new apartment towers popping up in their neighborhood — but one project in Hamilton Heights aims to have a different sort of impact on the surrounding community.

The youth mentorship organization Brotherhood/Sister Sol wrapped up structural work last week on its new, six-story headquarters in Hamilton Heights, where it has been based since shortly after its founding in the mid-1990s. The new building, dubbed the Bro/Sis Center, will replace the three-story brownstone on 143rd Street that housed the organization for 20 years until it was demolished in 2018 to make way for the new construction. Brotherhood/Sister Sol has raised more than $18 million for the new building, which is set to be completed in late summer 2021.

HARLEM, NY – Harlem will end the year by highlighting the community's Black-owned businesses with a series of holiday events.

The holiday initiatives include Shop Harlem, which includes a digital holiday gift guide that features Black-owned Harlem businesses and creators. The initiative will feature giveaways to keep local businesses alive.

The Shop Harlem Virtual Holiday Fair will take place on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. DJ Stormin' Norman will host an at-home dance party and supporters can treat family and friends with gifts from Harlem's creators.

Instead of holding its annual tree lighting ceremony, St. Nicholas Park is inviting neighbors to come hang their own ornaments this year.
HARLEM, NY — Forced to cancel its annual Christmas tree lighting celebration this year, leaders of St. Nicholas Park have come up with a creative way for Harlemites to celebrate the holidays safely.

Friends of St. Nicholas Park announced Monday that this year's tree, which sits on the north side of the 135th Street Plaza, will be lit up Saturday and glow each night throughout the holiday season.

In Harlem, Mayor Unveils Park Spaces Renamed For Black Luminaries

HARLEM, NY — Two park spaces in Harlem were formally renamed for two of the neighborhood's most celebrated Black intellectuals this weekend, part of a citywide effort to honor the Black experience in New York.

Saturday's ceremony at St. Nicholas Park, attended by Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray, marked the official renaming of the park's lawn for the writer James Baldwin, as well as the nearby St. Nicholas Playground North for the poet Langston Hughes.

Longtime Board Chairman Steps Down at Apollo Theater

When Richard D. Parsons joined the board of the Apollo Theater in 1999, the nonprofit organization in Harlem was about to shut its doors.

“In the late ’90s and early 2000s, no one talked about the Apollo,” Parsons, a former Time Warner chief executive and Citigroup chairman, said. “It was basically closing up.”

But when the 72-year-old businessman announced his departure on Thursday from the board he had led for nearly two decades, he left behind an institution that, before the pandemic, had been on track to open two new stages this fall and record what would have been its best fiscal year ever.

David Dinkins Dies At 93; Was New York City Mayor In Early 1990s

NEW YORK, NY — He was born in New Jersey but made his name in New York City, which he loved and led. David Dinkins, who became — and remains — New York City's only Black mayor, died Monday. He was 93.

Dinkins was found unconscious around 9 p.m. by a home health aide who called 911, two city officials told Patch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After serving with the Marines in Korea, Dinkins settled in Harlem and became a lawyer. He soon became involved in local Democratic politics. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1966. He also served as city clerk and president of the Board of Elections before being elected Manhattan borough president in 1985.

Four years later, he was elected as the city's 106th mayor, defeating Rudolph Giuliani by a mere 47,000 votes.

A celebration of life was held Saturday for the late former mayor David Dinkins. A ceremony was held at the National Action Network‘s House of Justice in Harlem. Politicians remembered Dinkins as a man dedicated to New York City and its people. .

Food Giveaways Blanket Harlem Ahead Of Thanksgiving

HARLEM, NY — Giveaways of turkey, fresh produce and other essentials have blanketed Harlem this week, as neighbors and organizations stepped up amid a growing need for food donations.

The latest events included meal deliveries and turkey distributions by the Stanley M. Isaacs Center, whose Thanksgiving giveaway in East Harlem will distribute dozens of turkeys to families in need.

Earlier Tuesday, Union Settlement hosted its annual Thanksgiving food drive on East 104th Street, providing turkeys and holiday fixings to more than 300 neighborhood families.

2 Supportive Housing Projects Proposed In East Harlem

HARLEM, NY — Nonprofit leaders unveiled plans this week for two new supporting housing developments in East Harlem, both of which would redevelop vacant lots into serving vulnerable groups and providing a number of supportive services.

The presentations were made Wednesday during a Community Board 11 committee meeting. One development, on East 106th Street and Second Avenue, would serve homeless LGBTQ youth, while the other, on 123rd Street and Park Avenue, would be reserved mostly for formerly incarcerated people.

Both projects will need to go through the city's Uniform Land Use Review Process (ULURP), a lengthy process where elected officials and the community board will get to weigh in before the City Council has the final say.

New Harlem River Drive Ramp Opens, Easing Neighborhood Traffic

EAST HARLEM, NY — State officials on Monday hailed the opening of a long-awaited ramp connecting the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge to the northbound lanes of the Harlem River Drive, eliminating the need for drivers to take a detour through East Harlem streets.

That detour had been in place for more than 62 years, since that segment of the Harlem River Drive opened in 1958. The new ramp will divert an estimated 17,000 cars each day from East Harlem, where northbound drivers previously had to exit the bridge near East 125th Street and drive along Second Avenue before merging onto an on-ramp next to a playground.

The Gathering Spaces are a series of five artist-designed community areas along the Burnham Wildlife Corridor (BWC), a 100-acre ribbon of urban wilderness spanning both sides of Lake Shore Drive. The five Gathering Spaces reflect the nature and culture of the area and serve as assembly grounds and rest areas for people exploring the Corridor. The spaces were designed and created by teams of local artists in partnership with community-based organizations in the Chinatown, Bronzeville, and Pilsen neighborhoods. On this adventure, we'll travel along the BWC to get the inside scoop on the creative process, community goals, and environmental context of each Gathering Space.

Broadway in Chicago

With more than 200 theaters, Chicago is home to a rich and varied theater community, well known for a diverse mix of original productions that began here and then went on to Broadway and the world. Broadway In Chicago currently own many of the anchor theatres in Theatre District, including the CIBC Theatre (home of Hamilton), the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place, the Cadillac Palace Theatre, and the James M. This tour, curated by the National Public Housing Museum, introduces you to the heart of Chicago’s Near West Side with its vibrant communities, diverse cultures, and history of activism and resistance. Explore fascinating sites where public housing residents built community across racial and economic divides, restaurants and bakeries that continue to create delectable food from various cultures and learn about overlooked and invisible stories about where people studied, organized, and confronted social injustice. We recognize this land as being indigenous, and we follow the lead of the first peoples who, despite massive genocidal violence, have never relinquished the struggle for land, water, culture, their people.

The American Writers Museum is the first national museum in the United States dedicated to engaging the public in celebrating American writers. Tucked away in the West Ridge community is a treasured place— Indian Boundary Park.  The 13-acre park was developed in two major phases—the first in 1916 and the second in the early 1920s. Plans for both phases were created by Richard Gloede, a landscape gardener and horticulturalist from Evanston.  Unlike other parks of the era that accommodated numerous athletic activities, Gloede and the Park Board sought to create a beautiful landscape for rest and relaxation.  The park has always had a seamless relationship with the adjacent neighborhood, and despite various changes over the years, Indian Boundary Park has always retained its special character.
