Over two centuries old and still serving the Harlem Community.

125th Street in Harlem was designed to be the main thoroughfare in the original 1811 grid plan when it was designated as one of 15 streets in Manhattan that are 100 feet in width rather than 60. Today, it remains a vital transportation artery, but has come to represent much more; it is a cultural, economic, and social epicenter that has retained its identity throughout tumultuous periods of change.

2013 marked the 200th anniversary of 125th Street. "To commemorate the anniversary, Spectator spoke with Harlem residents and pulled together photos from the past and present that show the heart of the street that has defined a neighborhood."

The 125th Street corridor is highly connected to the surrounding neighborhoods and the greater City of New York. 

The 1 Train subway stop on 125th Street and Broadway is a highly trafficked stop that connects upper Manhattan to lower Manhattan. It carries Columbia, Manhattan School of Music, and City College students, local residents, commuting workers, and visitors to the area. With the added benefit of being an elevated subway stop, it is an iconic and visible symbol of connectivity in the area.

The area is additionally well-connected by numerous bus routes, Uber, Lyft, and micro-mobility options like the Citibike docked bike share portal.

One can hear music playing, see Studio Museum under construction and basically everything is closed.  There are few people on The Street.  It's a beautiful day as the camera zooms pass more places under construction with scaffolding up. Victoria Secrets is closed. Whole Foods is open. Staples and a few more essential businesses open. People are waiting to get in.

Southern black migrants brought the blues to Chicago, where the music helped them forge connections and transform an unfamiliar, often inhospitable city into a new home. The music was also transformed—electrified and amplified to compete with urban noise. Explore fascinating sites where public housing residents built community across racial and economic divides, restaurants and bakeries that continue to create delectable food from various cultures and learn about overlooked and invisible stories about where people studied, organized, and confronted social injustice. We recognize this land as being indigenous, and we follow the lead of the first peoples who, despite massive genocidal violence, have never relinquished the struggle for land, water, culture, their people.

Tucked away in the West Ridge community is a treasured place— Indian Boundary Park.  The 13-acre park was developed in two major phases—the first in 1916 and the second in the early 1920s. Plans for both phases were created by Richard Gloede, a landscape gardener and horticulturalist from Evanston.  Unlike other parks of the era that accommodated numerous athletic activities, Gloede and the Park Board sought to create a beautiful landscape for rest and relaxation.  The park has always had a seamless relationship with the adjacent neighborhood, and despite various changes over the years, Indian Boundary Park has always retained its special character.
